The Australia Philippines Young Professionals (APYP) is bridging the gap between seasoned industry leaders and aspiring young professionals through its innovative MentorConnect Program. Designed to support emerging professionals, especially but not limited to international students, the program aims to foster meaningful connections and facilitate the sharing of expertise, guidance, and career insights.
Successful Event Launch
On July 11th, 2024, APYP officially launched the MentorConnect Program at Exchange Tower, The Esplanade, Perth, Western Australia. The event was a success, attracting over 100 attendees, including international students, young professionals, and experienced industry leaders.
The event boasted an impressive lineup of speakers, including Honorary Pierre Yang MLC, StudyPerth CEO Derryn Belford, and APYP Director Louisa Cotter.
Panel discussions were another highlight of the event, with inspiring industry leaders Nilesh Makwana and Cherryl Anyayahan sharing their success stories and the significant impact their mentors had on their careers. Mentee Panel Speakers Joana Dutosme, Jinwoo Kim, and Celena Hidalgo provided their perspectives on mentorship and their expectations from the program.
At the end of the event, guests had a valuable opportunity to network and connect with like-minded individuals.
About MentorConnect: Program Overview and Benefits
The MentorConnect Program is designed to offer a unique platform for seasoned professionals to share their expertise and for students and other young professionals to seek guidance on their career journeys. The program provides participants with personalised mentorship, opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals, and access to a supportive community dedicated to their success. Participants gain valuable insights and skills to accelerate their careers, make impactful connections, and access exclusive resources and opportunities for career development.
APYP Chairman Sky Vidamo shared the organisation’s vision of providing social connectivity between youth and the community, particularly supporting the transition of international students into Western Australian society. In fact, The MentorConnect Program is part of APYP’s broader initiative, Project Compass, launched last year. MentorConnect is the first in a series of events aimed at fostering professional growth and community engagement.
How MentorConnect Program Works
The MentorConnect Program operates over a six-month period, requiring a minimum of a 30-minute mentorship session per month. The APYP committee conducts monthly check-ins and provides feedback forms at the program’s conclusion by February next year. Depending on the mentor-mentee relationship, sessions can extend beyond the minimum requirement. APYP carefully coordinates the matching process, aligning profiles based on background and interests to ensure like-minded individuals are paired.
APYP Director Louisa Cotter announced that approximately 50 of Perth’s most inspiring mentors from various industries have already registered for the program, with numbers continuing to grow following the event.
Expressions of interest close on the 31st of July 2024, and interested individuals can register online to become mentors or mentees.
