Aquino win ‘a return for oligarchs’

BY KATRINA MENNEN A. VALDEZ REPORTER

The apparent victory of Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino 3rd in the May 10 polls signals the return of the oligarchy, a prominent Cornell University professor said. Benedict Richard Anderson, an Aaron L. Binenkorb Professor Emeritus of International Studies and Government and Asian Studies at the Cornell University, said in an interview that the country’s future under Aquino is not really rosy.

“My outlook on the presidency of [Noynoy] Aquino is not good,” Anderson said.

Anderson is the author of Imagined Communities, a book that earned several international recognitions.

Anderson is in Manila for the three-day Asian Public Intellectuals Fellowships Program.

“Despite the ‘celebrated victory’ of Aquino who is poised to occupy the highest post in the land, the Philippines has nothing to be optimistic about as this triumph is merely a success of the oligarchs in the country,” he said.
