Cebuano Association of Australia celebrates first anniversary

Committee with PlaquesBy George T.

Cebuanos really know how to party. Cebuanos and friends came to celebrate the Cebuano Association of Australia’s first year anniversary on 8 June at the Frecca Azzuria Club Function Centre with a night full of dancing to a three-piece band and DJ Pros providing the music.

It was great to see so many other Filipino associations and community leaders who came to show their support for the Cebuano Association.

The night was officially opened by the President Mr Alex Sy. In his opening address, he gave a brief history of the creation of the Cebuano Association, its proud achievements in its first 12 months, as well as what it continues to focus on, and gave thanks to the Filipino newspapers in Victoria for their coverage.

He emphasised the involvement of the youth, especially the emcee of the evening, Ms Christine Ciar, who is also the Cebuanoladies in Gowns Association Youth Ambassador and Coordinator.

He continued to say that whilst there have been speculations and innuendos as to why the Cebuano Association was created, he clarified the existence and intentions of the Association.

At his closing remarks, he gave special thanks to the founding committee officers by presenting each of them a plaque of recognition. He thanked them for their dedication, support, and relentless efforts for the success of the Association.

The night was also attended by special guests, the Liberal Party Candidate for Hotham Mr Fazal Cader, who donated a wine bottle signed by the Premier of Victoria, as well as the Liberal Candidate for Holt Mr Ricardo Balancy, who also donated a nice bottle of JW Scotch, and Mr Sam Afra, a great community leader and a friend to the Filipinos.

We also witnessed two lucky guests who won the coveted titles of Best Gala Ball Gown (Female) and Best Dressed (Male). They each received a trophy and a gift voucher.

It was also good to see newly-arrived Cebuanos meeting other Cebuanos. At the end of the night, there were lots of wonderful raffle and door prizes donated by several sponsors and donors.

The Cebuano Association’s next big event is the September Spring Fever in Springvale.
