Eala makes history for the Philippines after winning the US Open junior singles championship

The Philippines’ No. 10 seed Alexandra Eala won her first Grand Slam junior singles title with a 6-2, 6-4 defeating No.2 seed Lucie Havlickova in the US Open girls’ final. This is a historic win as she became the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam junior singles trophy.

It is Eala’s third major title overall, following her doubles win in the 2020 Australian Open and 2021 French Open.

Delivering her victory speech in Filipino, 17-year-old Eala offered her win to the future of Philippine tennis.

“Buong puso ko itong ipinaglaban hindi lang para sa sarili ko kundi para makatulong din ako sa kinabukasan ng Philippine tennis. So hindi lang ‘to panalo ko. Panalo natin ito,” she said.
