An earthquake has occurred in Australia’s south-east coast, including Melbourne, regional Victoria, Canberra and New South Wales.
Geoscience Australia says a magnitude-5.9 (downgraded from 6.0) earthquake was felt around Mansfield in Victoria’s north-east around 9:15am today.
There are reports emerging of significant damage in some parts of Victoria with residents from metro Melbourne reporting violent shaking.
Experts warn that there will be hundreds of aftershocks to occur.

What to do if aftershocks occur
If aftershocks occur, stay safe by taking the following actions:
- Drop, cover under a sturdy table or piece of furniture and hold on.
- Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit.
