Home base: Affordable office space for small organisations

The City of Melbourne and AMES recognise that many small organisations can’t afford their own office space. When an organisation is operated by volunteers or part-time staff, finding affordable office space can be especially challenging.

Small community and cultural organisations are welcome to use the Melbourne Multicultural Hub as their home base. With 10 ‘hot desks’ (shared desks with computers/internet access/general office facilities) available, the hub could be a great accommodation solution. Sharing office space also creates opportunities for your organisation to connect with like-minded others.

Home base facilities
Groups/organisations who become home base users have access to:

  • business equipment such as a photocopier and scanner
  • computer/internet access
  • locker and/or filing cabinet
  • low cost access to meeting/function rooms
  • Melbourne Multicultural Hub postal address
  • subscription to the Melbourne Multicultural Hub newsletter, with information about grant and training opportunities
  • the opportunity to get involved in the broader activities of the centre and to network with other like-minded individuals/groups
  • help and advice from AMES staff

Applying for home base membership
Fees apply, and home base membership will be granted according to the criteria listed below. Please ensure you have read and understood all the criteria before applying for access.

All home base members are expected to abide by the terms and conditions outlined in their agreement.

Priority target groups
The following target groups will be given priority access to facilities at the hub:

  • established migrant groups residing in the City of Melbourne
  • new and emerging humanitarian and migrant communities
  • Indigenous communities
  • international student groups
  • multi-faith networks

Eligibility criteria
Groups and community organisations from the above list must:

  • represent one of the priority target groups
  • be volunteer-run (or primarily volunteer-run)
  • be not for profit, non-government, and not a political party
  • support the principles of multiculturalism

Additional considerations
The following factors will also be included in considering hot desk applications:

  • Does the group or organisation encourage/provide services for communities to gather, learn, socialise and celebrate?
  • Does the group or organisation add to the diversity of Melbourne Multicultural Hub users?
  • How many members does the group or organisation have?

How to apply
For home base enquiries and applications, call (03) 9092 1500 or email bookings@multiculturalhub.com.au.

You can also drop by the hub at 506 Elizabeth Street during business hours to make bookings in person.
