Fortunately, people are becoming more aware that we need to start being more eco-conscious. We are learning that it doesn’t need to be anything extreme. It can be as simple as recycling garbage. But there are so many different big and small things that you can do that will keep your home environment clean and decrease your carbon footprint.

Think green when cleaning

All of us have our favourite cleaning products and detergents, but are they toxic to the environment? Many people don’t realise that a lot of those products are very toxic to the environment. Once you have washed them down the drain, it takes a lot of energy to purify the water again. There are a lot of switches that you can make, so you don’t pollute the water with toxic cleaners. You can make your cleaners as effective as store-bought ones out of baking soda, lemon juice or vinegar. It will kill all the bacteria as well as de-grease your surfaces. But if you don’t like that, you can make the switch to steam cleaners.

Compost all of your food waste

Another super simple way to be more eco-friendly is simply composting your food scraps. All you need is a compost bin, and you are good to go. The best thing about them is you can find them for a low price. Once you have the compost bin, all you need to do is scrape all the old food into the bin, and it will turn into compost over time that you can use for your garden.

Install a smart metre

It is really easy to leave the water on or leave the heating on for longer than you need. One of the biggest ways we consume energy is throughout our home heating systems and boilers. To avoid leaving a huge carbon footprint and waiting for water, you should look into installing a smart metre. Devices such as those will program all the things to turn on at certain times of the day and shut down when not needed. It will also work amazingly if you have a garden. It will prevent your garden hose or an automatic hose reel from using too much water or even leaking when they are not on. In the long run, you will be able to monitor your electricity consumption and save on your energy bills.

Invest in energy efficient light bulbs

Even though energy-efficient light bulbs have been a thing for many years, people are just now discovering that they exist and are implementing them into their homes. A couple of years back, energy-efficient lights were not so popular as they didn’t work well. Thankfully, with technology improving at rapid rates, energy-efficient lights are better than ever. They will use less energy, but there won’t be a need to change them out as frequently as you would old-fashioned ones.

Installing solar panels on your home

One of the best changes that you can make to your house for it to be more eco-friendly is installing solar panels. Unfortunately, it is a pricey investment, but it will save you money in the long run and make your home the ultimate eco-friendly home.

Save water with a low-flow shower head

If you can’t or don’t want to install a smart meter, installing a low-flow showerhead is one of the best things you can do to save water. Most people are convinced that they are saving water, but they end up taking a thirty-minute shower. If you are one of those people or you live with someone who does that, a low-flow showerhead is something that you have to get. It will save energy, water and help you spend less time showering. But no worries, it is enough water to have a normal shower.

As you can see, there are many different yet simple ways your house can be eco-friendly. Start by doing one of those things and you will still make a difference, then slowly make your way up, and you will have a completely eco-friendly household in no time.
