Filipino-Australian Director Wins Awards for ‘FILO-BOY’ Short Film

The short film ‘FILO-BOY’, directed by 21-year-old Filipino-Australian Caleb Ribates, was streamed earlier this year as part of his studies at a Melbourne film school. The film, which expresses Ribates’ personal experiences and thoughts as a Filipino-Australian, was streamed for free as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival, along with other graduate films from the Victorian College of the Arts.

Ribates was awarded the prestigious Margaret Lawrence Social Justice Award and the Harry Hains Memorial Bursary for this short film. His work thematically and aesthetically explores the Asian diaspora, self and identity. He is motivated to continue making works that touch on relevant social issues and suburban conflict.
