PCSFFI celebrates 117th Philippine Independence Day

On 7 June 2015, the Philippine Cultural Society for Families and Friends Inc. (PCSFFI) celebrated the 117th Philippines Independence Day at the Main Hall, Activity Center, Raleigh Road, Maribyrnong.

A mass was held officiated by Reverend Fr. Lito Asis followed by a sumptuous lunch brought by most of the members. The guests enjoyed the regional cuisine.

Guests and members were graciously welcomed by Mrs Henrietta “Gigs” Soledad, the PCSFFI outgoing President. Mrs Aniceta L. Esmaquel, the society’s founder, led the song “Damdamin”, the theme song of the group.

Established in the early ‘80s, PCSFFI is one of the oldest senior citizens groups in Melbourne, Victoria.

Mr Manny G. Asuncion, one of the founders of Dulaang Bayan Melbourne Inc (DBMI), and one of the speakers, spoke about the heroes and countless people who had given their lives for the love and freedom of the country. Mr Rolly Limun, the coordinator of Community Partnership Program (CPP), gave a glimpse of the Philippine history.
There was a colourful parade of the Philippine flag participated in by the PCSFFI and guests as the nationalistic song “Bayan Ko” was sung.

The event was marked by Filipino folk dances and renditions of a number of lively Filipino folk songs with the guitar accompaniment by Ms Leonie Wenden and on the keyboard by Mr Rolly Limun. These entertainment numbers brought many memories from home.

Guests performers were Michelle de la Pena, Renato de la Pena and Thor Cortez who rendered two Filipino contemporary songs.

The finale number was a fashion show featuring attractive Filipiniana attire headed by Mrs Elsie Spitteri, FASCOVI President and Mrs Evelyn Alcantara. Live music was for the program was provided by Mrs Lerma Vasquez and energetically emceed by Mrs Eleanor Naldoza.

The newly-elected officers are: President, Mrs Tonette Wilkes; Vice President, Mrs Cleofe Palomo; Secretary, Mrs Patricia Tandoc; Treasurer, Mrs Mila Casole and Auditor, Mrs Julieta Summerhill.
