For many Filipinos who came of age in the 1980s, certain songs instantly take us back to life’s defining moments – school graduations, first heartbreaks, quiet crushes, and even promises scribbled in yearbooks. And for countless of us, those memories were soundtracked by one unforgettable voice: Raymond Lauchengco.
The Filipino Australian community in Melbourne welcomed back the OPM legend, his second visit within a year, for a special concert that rekindled old memories and brought classic hits back to life.
As Raymond once again took the stage – a bit older, wiser, yet singing with the same heartfelt sincerity – he shared how this year’s concert was made even more meaningful by two personal milestones: celebrating his 40th year in the music industry and turning 60.
A voice that grew with us
For overseas Filipinos, especially those who left the Philippines decades ago, Raymond’s music is a thread that ties us to the past – a gentle reminder of where we came from and how far we have come.
Hearing him sing his timeless hits live – from his breakout single I Need You Back to unforgettable ballads from the iconic 1980s film Bagets, which include Growing Up, So It’s You, Just Got Lucky, and Farewell – felt like opening a time capsule brimming with familiar faces, school memories, and the bittersweetness of growing up.
A graduation anthem
As Raymond himself admitted, no concert would be complete without his signature finale, Farewell – the Philippines’ unofficial graduation anthem.
“Farewell to you, my friends / We’ll see each other again / Don’t cry, ’cause it’s not the end of everything…”
Yes, it is a song about parting. But it is also about hope, lasting friendships, and moving forward while never fully letting go. Decades later, it still strikes a chord.

A night of memories
Raymond’s Melbourne concert was more than a musical event. It turned into a reunion of memories and a celebration of each one’s unique life journey.
As he sang the night’s setlist and brought the crowd to their feet, the audience sang along with smiles, some with misty eyes, and hearts full of gratitude for the songs that never really left us.
Because music like this, and memories this deep never truly fade.
