In celebration of the 78th Anniversary of Philippine-Australian Relations, Filipino community organisations have banded together to stage a cultural exhibit at Liverpool City Library throughout May and June, with the official opening on 4 May 2024.
Handog Pinoy spearheads the exhibit in collaboration with Aguman Capampangan, Banag-Banag, Filipino Community Cooperative, the Visayan Association and the UST Alumni Association.
The opening of the cultural exhibit will be attended by the Philippine Ambassador Ma. Hellen De La Vega, Philippine Consul General to Sydney Charmaine Rowena Aviquivil, Mayor Ned Mannoun of Liverpool Council, Ms Chandra Kaliyandaya MP, and Filipino community leaders.
This eclectic exhibition reflects the Philippines’ rich cultural heritage, entwined with history, customs, and traditions. It will showcase the brilliant craftsmanship of Filipino artisans, from intricately woven textiles to vibrant tribal costumes to captivating artworks that showcase the interplay between tradition and modernity and are imbued with age-long Filipino values and religious overtones.
“This unique collection is a testament to the Filipino’s talent and creativity,” said a spokesperson for the group. It will be good for the younger generation to connect to their roots.”
In addition, a collection of books written by Filipino-Australian authors will also be donated to the library for Filipinos and other nationalities to enjoy.
“It is our aim to lift the profile of Filipinos in Australia,” said the spokesperson. “We are now over 400,000 Filipinos in Australia, the fifth largest migrant community. We’d like to show what we’ve shared and contributed to our multicultural community. “
