Fil-Aussie band Five Fifty Myth releases debut single ‘Andito Lang Ako’

With a nostalgic, heart-on-sleeve sound that hearkens back to the rock bands of the 90s and mid-2000s, Five Fifty Myth’s debut single Andito Lang Ako will tug at your heartstrings and make you long intensely for your significant other – whether you have one or not.

Two months since its release on September 11, the track has streamed over 48,000 times on Spotify. Andito Lang Ako continues to have an average of 14.1k active listeners per month on Spotify.

Five Fifty Myth is a five-piece Filipino alternative rock band based in Melbourne, Australia whose members include Warren Ribates (vocals and songwriting), Charles Michael Bagundol (lead guitar), Frederick Ursua (rhythm guitar), Denn Gerrel Manaloto (bass guitar) and Darrel John Roberto (drums).

Citing 90s Filipino bands such as Eraserheads and Rivermaya as their main influences, the band’s sound, led by frontman Warren’s soaring vocals, is a fresh take on the punk/pop-rock style so popular throughout the 90s and early 2000s. The band even covered a song from one of the most popular groups from that era amongst Pinoys – Stephen Speaks’ Passenger Seat – on their YouTube channel. The band began a lockdown livestream series on their channel in April, with its members playing together from different locations across Melbourne. Touchingly, the band begins almost every one of their videos with a screencap of a quote by Roy Ayers: “The true beauty of music is that it connects people.”

The group has come a long way since, now a signed talent of indie label Blacksheep Records Manila since 3 September 2020. They are now looking to make a lasting impression on the OPM scene with their debut single, Andito Lang Ako. The song is a heart-rending hugot rock ballad about, in the words of the band: “a guy who falls in love with his best friend who…[is] in a one-sided relationship with someone else, but she still stays with this person and gives everything she has to them. Despite his love being unrequited, our hero still loves his best friend truly, and is willing to wait for her eyes to open, hoping it will be him that she loves in the end. Two martyrs in love, both not getting their heart’s desire at the same time!”

Five Fifty Myth’s Andito Lang Ako is now available for streaming on Spotify, Apple Music and other digital platforms. A lyric video for the song is out now:

The single is distributed by Blacksheep Records Manila, a fresh new sublabel of Viva Records whose vision is to make Filipino music relevant on the global stage. The label was founded in August 2020 and is headed by Jaworski Garcia, a record label executive with several years of experience in the music industry, most notably with Warner Music Philippines.
