Magdalena Moreno, Chief Executive Officer of Kultour, is proud to announce that Fil-Australian artist Alwin Reamillo is bringing his unique community art to Melbourne in November 2010. Kultour, an initiative of the Australia Council for the Arts to support arts reflecting multicultural Australia, is collaborating with The Substation Community Arts Centre and Bayanihan Australia Community Network Inc (BACNI) in this community building project.

“Alwin Reamillo is a remarkable artist whose Thuringowa Helicopter Project is an excellent example of a community collaboration aimed to actively invoke the Filipino practice of bayanihan (community solidarity and cooperation),” says Magdalena who sits on the Public Art Advisory Panel for the City of Melbourne and is a Board Member of the Arts Industry Council (Vic).

Bayanihan challenges and transforms the negative effect of so-called ‘crab mentality’, a cultural habit of disparaging and pulling others down, like crabs trapped in a container. The Thuringowa Helicopter enables movement- lifting an individual or community, allowing movement from one place to another, enabling mobility, travel and directional change beyond obstacles.

The historic The Substation used to be an electric substation and after 12 years of hard work, The Substation has officially opened its doors to the public, artists, musicians, performers and community groups. “It will be a pleasure to bring the Filipino community and other groups together at the Centre to work on the helicopter during the workshops, “adds Director Jeremy Gaden (pictured right).

Reamillo has worked with local communities at Pinnacles Gallery, North Queensland and is currently exhibiting in Darwin, Northern Territory before continuing the artistic tour to Melbourne, Victoria.

BACNI is the community partner linking the project to Filipino Australian community organisations and local schools. The Thuringowa Helicopter Project is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Pinoy culture to mainstream arts. It is timed beautifully with the Philippine Fiesta in November and the Pasko sa Nayon in December 2010.
