Philippine Airlines marks 85 years as Asia-Pacific’s most punctual airline with fares from $794

Philippine Airlines (PAL) is marking 85 years in the skies with a milestone that combines history, performance and affordability. The Philippines’ national flag carrier is celebrating its anniversary with special return fares from Australia starting at AUD 794, alongside recognition as the most punctual airline in the Asia-Pacific region.

For many Filipino-Australians, travelling to the Philippines is rarely just a holiday. It means attending weddings and reunions, caring for ageing parents, introducing children to their grandparents, fulfilling business commitments, or simply reconnecting with home. In that context, both price and reliability matter.

A legacy that began in 1941

Philippine Airlines holds the distinction of being Asia’s first commercial airline. The company was incorporated on 26 February 1941, laying the foundation for what would become one of the region’s longest-serving carriers.

Its maiden flight took place on 15 March 1941, carrying five passengers from Manila to Baguio. That short domestic journey marked the beginning of an aviation story that would eventually span continents.

Over eight decades later, PAL operates a modern fleet connecting 31 domestic and 39 international destinations worldwide. From Australia, the airline serves key gateways including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, linking Filipino communities directly to Manila and onward to provincial hubs across the archipelago.

For many members of the diaspora, PAL has been part of personal milestones – from first departures as new migrants to annual homecomings carrying balikbayan boxes packed with Australian chocolates and gifts for extended family.

Recognised for punctuality

While global aviation has faced staffing shortages, aircraft supply constraints and operational disruptions in recent years, PAL has been recognised for maintaining schedule reliability. The airline was ranked the most punctual carrier in the Asia-Pacific region by aviation analytics firm Cirium (January 2026).

Alvin Miranda, PAL Vice President of Marketing, said the anniversary celebration is closely tied to the airline’s operational performance.

“Reaching 85 years is an incredible achievement, but leading the Asia-Pacific region with outstanding on-time performance is what we are most proud of today,” Miranda said.

“We know that every minute of a well-deserved holiday is precious. Earning this record for reliability means our passengers can trust us to deliver not just our signature warm hospitality, but the absolute precision needed to start their getaways flawlessly.”

For travellers flying out of Australia, punctual departures can make a significant difference, particularly for those with domestic connecting flights within the Philippines or time-sensitive commitments such as weddings, medical appointments or family events.

Anniversary fare details

To mark its 85th anniversary, PAL has launched a special fare promotion with the following inclusions:

– Return flights to Manila starting from $794
– Travel from 2 March 2026 onwards
– Free baggage allowance
– In-flight meals and refreshments
– Advanced seat selection
– Seamless connections via Manila to 31 domestic destinations

The inclusion of baggage and meals remains important for many Filipino travellers, particularly those bringing pasalubong or travelling with family.

Beyond Manila

While Manila remains the main international gateway, PAL’s domestic network enables travellers to connect onward to destinations across the country.

These include tourist favourites such as Boracay and Bohol, known for white sand beaches and diving sites, as well as Cebu, Davao, Iloilo and Laoag – key regional centres with strong diaspora ties. Island destinations such as Siargao, Siquijor, Puerto Princesa and Busuanga continue to attract both returning Filipinos and international visitors.

For Filipino-Australians, the ability to book through-ticketed connections reduces the stress of coordinating multiple carriers and separate baggage arrangements.

Balancing heritage and modern expectations

As Asia’s first commercial airline, PAL’s history spans pre-war aviation, post-war rebuilding, the jet age and modern long-haul operations. Over time, the airline has positioned itself around its “heartfelt service” identity while adapting to evolving safety, fleet and digital booking standards.

The 85-year milestone comes at a time when travellers are increasingly comparing airlines not just on price, but also on punctuality records, inclusions, connectivity and overall reliability.

Accessing the anniversary sale

Travellers can access the 85th anniversary sale and review full fare conditions by visiting the official Philippine Airlines website. Fares are subject to availability and airline terms.
