Student dependent visa holder faces uphill battle with stage 4 rectal cancer and medical expenses

Melbourne, Australia – Marvin Baluyot, a student dependent visa holder, arrived in Melbourne last June 2022 with his family. He was excited to start a new chapter in his life, but his plans were abruptly put on hold when he was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer in November 2022.

Marvin sought treatment at Victoria Crescent Medical Centre and underwent a series of procedures and tests to confirm the diagnosis. However, the expenses for these tests and procedures were not covered by his insurance company, leaving him and his family to pay for everything out of pocket. Despite repeated attempts to get the insurance company to cover the costs, they refused and told him to wait until June 2023 for a decision.

Marvin’s condition quickly worsened, and he was forced to take a leave of absence from work in December 2022. He started his first round of chemotherapy on January 17, using up all his savings. With no money left for future treatments and chemotherapy, Marvin is turning to the community for help.

“I want to live and fight for my illness for my family, especially my son who is only three years old,” Marvin said. “Any amount that comes from your heart is a big help for my treatments.”

Marvin has set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his medical expenses. He is asking for donations from anyone willing to help. The link to his fundraising page can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/f/34g7ze-cancer-warrior-needs-your-help.

“I am not working since December because of my condition, and I can’t afford to pay my medical bills,” Marvin said. “Any amount can save me for my upcoming procedure next week. I thank you in advance for your help and God bless.”

Marvin’s case serves as a reminder of the financial struggles many people face with healthcare costs, even with insurance coverage.

The community is encouraged to donate and support Marvin in his fight against cancer.
