EJ Delijero, a Melbourne-based Filipino international student, was recently diagnosed with Viral Encephalitis, a life-threatening condition that causes inflammation in the brain. This serious condition has left EJ unable to study, a requirement tied to her student visa, placing her future in Australia at risk. Viral Encephalitis often results in prolonged hospital stays and the need for intensive rehabilitation, including therapy to regain basic motor and cognitive skills.

In Sydney, Traci, another Filipino international student, faces her own battle against life-threatening health issues. Traci has been hospitalised at St. George Kogarah since 10 December 2024, fighting an Abscess Skin Infection and Septicemia (blood infection). Her condition required two emergency surgeries to save her life. The surgeries, while successful, mark just the beginning of her long and arduous recovery journey.

Traci remains in the hospital under close medical supervision, unable to work or provide for her basic needs. With mounting hospital bills and the cost of medications and treatments, her financial situation has become dire. Friends and supporters have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover her medical expenses, post-surgical care, and daily necessities. To lend your support, you can visit the GoFundMe campaign page.

The Struggles of International Students in Crisis

The challenges faced by EJ and Traci highlight the vulnerability of international students who lack access to comprehensive healthcare and financial safety nets in Australia. These students often rely on part-time work to support themselves, but severe health emergencies disrupt their ability to earn and threaten their ability to stay in the country. The cost of healthcare in Australia, combined with the absence of family support systems, makes situations like these particularly devastating for those far from home.

Bayanihan Spirit in Action

The Filipino-Australian community has long been known for its bayanihan spirit, a tradition of communal unity and mutual support. Now is the time to show solidarity and compassion for EJ and Traci. Contributions, no matter how small, can provide much-needed relief and hope as they focus on their recovery. Let us rally together and extend our love and support to these brave individuals who need our help now more than ever.
