More than 400 participants and 150 volunteers will take part in ASEAN Games Australia 2014 from 12-14 September 2014 at the Albert Park, Melbourne, Victoria. It will feature some sports such as badminton, basketball, futsal, netball, squash, table tennis, tennis, ultimate frisbee and volleyball. ASEAN Games Australia is an initiative by the Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia, Victoria Chapter, with the support of other ASEAN-based student councils. It is also proudly supported by the Council of International Students Australia, a new supporting partner this year.

ASEAN-based student councils include Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia, Victoria (MASCA), Singaporeans of Victoria, Melbourne Overseas Vietnamese Student Association, Thai Students Association of Victoria, Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia Australia, Victoria and Filipino-Australian Student Council of Victoria.

The tagline for ASEAN Games Australia 2014 is “Embrace Diversity, Celebrate Victory” announced by the Project Director, Sheh Tyne Yeo during the official launch of the sports registration on 30 July 2014. “We encourage people from ASEAN member states to gather together and participate in this sports event to bring out their passion in sports together as one. Though we may come from different countries, we still share the same drive to excel in the sports we are passionate about,” explained by Sheh Tyne Yeo, who is also the MSports Director of MASCA Victoria.

ASEAN Games hopes to foster unity among all ASEAN communities in Australia and to form a community that engages in healthy activities. “We encourage participants to step out of their comfort zone, as this is a great way to strengthen the relationship between the ASEAN community in Australia, especially among university students,” added Yeo.

ASEAN Games strives to offer the best experiences to the participants by providing the best competition venue for each sport and giving back to sports participants. This year, more than $3,500 cash prizes will be rewarded to the winners of each game and each participant will stand a chance to win various vouchers proudly supported by sponsors.

This annual event is open to everyone from ASEAN countries in Australia. The Association of South East Nations comprises of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam. “The committee has put in various efforts to increase the awareness for this sports event for students and non-students across Australia. This year, Instagram is our new social media tool to reach out to more people by following the hashtag trend, everyone can #aseangamesaustralia for more information and updates about us,” said Yeo.
