‘Subukan mong lumayo, paminsan minsan’: a poem by Rado Gatchalian

Ni Rado Gatchalian

Subukan mong lumayo, paminsan-minsan.
Marahil ang katahimikan ang tutulak sa iyo upang maging malaya.

Kung batid mong di tiyak ang hinaharap,
sikapin mong hanapin ito
sa pinakaiingatang baol ng mga alaalang niluma ng hikbi at dalita.

Huwag mong kalimutan ang nanlumo mong katayuan;

Hindi mo man muling mahahalikan,
Ang alaala lamang ang tangi mong
katuwang. Lumbay iyong kalimutan,
Tanggapin mo na lamang.

At kung di marinig ang tinig mo,
Kausapin mo ang mga bituin.
Malayo man subalit nagniningning.

Subukan mong lumayo, paminsan-minsan.
Marahil sa paglisan, magbabalik na muli
Ang kabataang ang pangarap lamang
Ay ang lumigaya, at di batid kung anong naghihintay na bukas.

Subukan mong lumayo.
Marahil nandito ka lamang…

Written originally in Filipino on 27 October 2020, the poem by Rado Gatchalian offers inspiration that the joy, success and truth that we aspire can be found within us. The work is translated in Pangasinan to celebrate another local language, and in English for appreciation of a wider audience.

English translation
(Translated by Rado Gatchalian)

Try to walk away, once in a while

Try to walk away, once in a while.
Perhaps, silence can encourage you to become free.

If you think the future is uncertain,
try to look for it
in the very fragile chest where old memories of tears and poverty are kept.

Do not forget your depressing state of life;
It is not a hindrance to avoid,
Even quitting is a way to scream for a solemn battle,
Not of disagreement of who owns the land
But a war between a heart and a heart.

Try to caress again the lips of your first love,
Although you can never kiss her again,
Only the memories are your
companion. Forget your sadness,
Just accept this.

And if you do not hear your voice,
Talk to the stars.
Although far but they shine.

Try to walk away, once in a while.
Perhaps in leaving, it will come again
The youth whose only dream
Is to be happy, and to not worry what will happen tomorrow.

Try to walk away.
Perhaps, you are just here…
